In India’s federal system the States have a major role in governance. They have their own political and administrative institutions. The governance of the state is carried out through a wide range of state services apart from the all India services like the IAS, IPS and IFS which are present throughout the country.

Technical and specialised services like engineering and medical, have their own recruitment examinations. However a State civil services examination is conducted for recruitment to the general services.

The structure and names of the State Services may vary from state to state. However there are a core group of services which are present in almost every state.

These include:

State Civil Service

State Police Service

State Accounts Service

State Commercial Taxes Service

However the range of state government’s functions being very wide and diverse, there are a very large number of services and posts for which recruitment is carried out through the State Civil Services Examination..

Other states have their own lists which vary according to local conditions. In general the state civil service and the state police service are akin to the All India Services while the other services would resemble the Central Services in that they deal with particular areas of governance.

Officers of the state services, particularly the Civil and Police services, are eligible for promotion to the All India Service, although they will continue to serve in their state.
